  • World demand forges Alaska mining success

Steve Sutherlin, Mining News Associate Editor|Updated Oct 31, 2004

Robust metal prices are the most positive factor affecting Alaska's mining industry over the past year, according to Steve Borell, executive director of the Alaska Miners Association. "Metal prices are what drives the industry," Borell said. He said it is a significant fact that prices for base metals such as lead, zinc, copper, nickel and molybdenum are high at the same time as those for gold, silver and platinum. In world metal pricing it is not often the case that base metals and precious metals rise simultaneously....

  • Gold explorers in full swing again

    Gary Park|Updated Sep 12, 2004

Healthy bullion prices are driving a resurgence of exploration spending in Canada, with budgets at their highest level in seven years. In a note to clients, National Bank Financial said that "after a prolonged drought," second quarter spending was up 20 percent from a year earlier, 75 percent ahead of 2002 and 100 percent above the late 1990s, when gold prices were only half of today's US$400 an ounce. The Canadian bank said North America's 11 largest gold producers hiked their exploration budgets to US$28 an ounce in the... Full story

Final budgets for several projects, including three prospects neighboring True North and three others in the Fort Knox/Gil area, are still pending, Harris said in interviews June 1 and June 5. Gary Park, Mining News Calgary Correspondent|Updated Apr 18, 2004

Gold exploration is being fired up in British Columbia and Canada's three northern territories, rekindled by improved metal prices. "The industry is finally coming back," declared Dan Jepsen, executive director of the British Columbia and Yukon Chamber of Mines. The British Columbia Ministry of Energy and Mines is counting on exploration doubling last year's spending of C$55 million, helped by the provincial government's efforts to reduce bureaucratic delays and introduce tax incentives for mining investments. Optimism has... Full story

  • AngloGold 'keen' on Alaska projects

Patricia Liles, Mining News Editor|Updated Apr 18, 2004

Describing Alaska as "a good place to do business," AngloGold (U.S.A.) Exploration's president of North America said the company's focus is shifting away from projects in Nevada and parts of Canada. The company increased its landholdings through a sizeable claim staking effort in recent months in the area surrounding the Pogo gold deposit, and is negotiating a land lease in the Livengood area. Total exploration spending in Alaska is planned for $2 million, which is more than two-thirds of the company's North America green-fie...

  • Alaska mining news summary: Gold prices take on new luster; exploration sector expects to see first year-on-year increase since '97

    Curt Freeman, PNA Columnist|Updated Jan 19, 2003

Another year has come and gone and Alaska's mining industry continues to generate jobs for its citizens and raw materials for the world. Although base metal prices remain mired at low levels, gold and platinum have risen steadily over the last month with gold in particular taking on new luster as it broke the $350 per ounce mark for the first time in five years. Platinum has rebounded from earlier lows and is now flirting with $600 per ounce levels while its geological... Full story
