Golden Predator Mining Corp. and Yukon Mint, a Golden Predator subsidiary, May 30 unveiled the First Yukon Mint .9999 gold coin at an event in Toronto, Ontario.
Yukon Mint gold coins will be part of a limited annual series of First Nation art selected through design contests on the obverse side and an iconic image of Klondike Gold Rush on the reverse.
The First Yukon Mint coin features the work of Kaska Nation artist Miranda Lane, a self-taught artist and spiritual intuitive.
When Lane was a child, her grandfather, Chief Little Jimmy, shared the importance of animal medicine and the value of our interconnectedness with all beings and Mother Earth – lessons that have greatly influenced and contributed to her artistic endeavors. She describes herself as someone who "paints intuitively from the heart, capturing the gifts of Mother Earth, using Spirit animals to deliver messages to help others on their Earth walk."
Her award-winning submission depicts a keda, the Dene word for moose, in honor and recognition for all the gifts the animal provides for her people. Keda represents hunting, food nutrition, community, sharing, kindness and survival in the North.
An iconic image linked to the Yukon that speaks to the history and entrepreneurial spirit of gold exploration graces the reverse side of the coin.
The Klondike Gold Rush (1897-1899) was an epic journey to an uncharted land in search of adventure and opportunity in the continent's final frontier. This quest for gold in the North seared the word "Klondike" into the collective consciousness of a generation. An iconic image depicting gold seekers' climb over the iconic White Pass on their way to the Yukon is being celebrated on the reverse of all Yukon Mint coins.
The inaugural mintage of the 2018 Kaska Keda coin has been limited to 180 one-ounce and 140 ½ ounce gold coins. Each coin has been engraved with a security feature to ensure its authenticity.
Gold from bulk sampling at Golden Predator's 3 Aces project in southeastern Yukon is incorporated into the coins and a percentage of the net profits from the sale of the coins will be shared with the Kaska Nation.
McEwen Mining Inc. Chairman Rob McEwen, who is one of Golden Predator's largest shareholders, purchased the first gold coin from the Yukon Mint.
The limited edition 2018 Kaska Keda gold coin will be available for sale to the public on June 21, which is National Aboriginal Day in Canada.
